Dog lovers shouldn’t miss the chronicle of New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik’s conversion from dog hater to dog lover. In his August 8 article “Dog Lover,” it all starts with his daughter begging to adopt a Havanese puppy (to be named Butterscotch). Gopnik ends up writing a wonderful history of dogs in general—where they came from, how different they are from us, yet why they have a special place in humans’ lives (one reason: they look us in the eye). Lots of great anecdotes and factoids including the estimate that there are 1 billion dogs on the planet currently. There’s also a very funny series of illustrations by Jules Feiffer with the article too. You may have be a subscriber to see the whole article. Personally, I think it’s worth it!http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/08/08/110808fa_fact_gopnik
